THE ZERO

Names belong

to things

and things belong

to people

*

but the zero

belongs

to nothing

*

zero is a recluse

*

an oddball

with an

odd portfolio

*

an unknown

figment

of mathematical

imagination

*

an empty

mark

that marks

the empty

*

a gaping

void in the

crust of calculus

… unfilled,

unoccupied,

uninhabited

*

it springs

from the vast

organic sprawl

of mathematics

*

emerges

from the dense

forests

of counting

and calculations

*

the sum total

of that

which isn’t there

that’s zero

*

an idea for

absence,

a symbol that

stands for

nothing,

a pack of digits

that add up to

nothing

*

estranged from

fellow integers

in a digital ballet,

the solitary pack

languishes

lonesome in a

corner

before ‘one’ – the

torchbearer of

the number game

*

my heart surges

in empathy for

a desolate

existence

bereft of meaning

devoid of value

deprived of

acknowledgment

*

with gentle

nurturing hands

I pick a string

of zeros

from their

lonely perch

and place them

where end

the twos, the fours,

the sevens,

the elevens

*

one simple

motion

unleashes

an ocean

a lilliput turns

goliath

sets the economy

in motion

*

the metamorphosis

is staggering.

the transformation

terrifying

*

it burns my

nurturing hands

*

bemired in the

inelegant robes

of bloated

numbers

– the millions,

the billions,

the trillions

the zero is now

a hero

*

craved by

thoughtless

consumerism

solicited by

the greed prism

worshipped

at the alter

of capitalism

I’ve created a monster
